Location: River Grove is a public charter school serving students in grades K-6, located in the beautiful Wilder Forest. Our incredible campus setting, on 73 acres of wooded and lake property, is utilized on a daily basis to provide a unique learning program that emphasizes the outdoors and place-based learning. Project-based learning is incorporated in each classroom.

Job Summary: The Special Education Teacher will provide direct instruction and support to meet the fulfillment of a students’ Individualized education plans (IEPs). Work involves teaching social skills, self-regulation, self-advocacy and social communication for students with educational, behavioral, hard of hearing, and/or physical impairments. The Special Education Teacher will work under the guidance of the Director of Special Education.

Essential Functions:

  • Facilitate and complete Special Education due process paperwork, such as IEPs, PWN, Progress Reports, etc.
  • Teach social skills, self-regulation, self-advocacy and social communication.
  • Respond to crisis behaviors
  • Lead the Crisis response team
  • Work with the evaluation team for re-evaluations.
  • Develop curriculum materials using engaging and age-appropriate instructional strategies.
  • Provide differentiated instruction for students in a variety of subjects.
  • Provide support to general education teachers to support students in the classroom.
  • Develop appropriate methods for meeting and documenting educational goals and objectives for each child.
  • Create a safe and welcoming classroom environment that incorporates hands-on learning activities.
  • Assess and analyze student performance through data collection.
  • Communicate closely and encourage parental involvement regarding program goals, classroom activities, homework, school functions and student progress.
  • Infuse international-mindedness into the curriculum on a continual basis.
  • Participate in regular planning and staff development activities.
  • Maintain knowledge of current and emerging trends, procedures and evaluation processes in special education.
  • Participate in professional development for project and place-based learning.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in education or special education.
  • Valid Minnesota teaching license.
  • Experience working with students.

Preferences:

  • Charter school experience preferred.
  • Special Education licensure in EBD or ABS.

Physical Requirements:

This position requires vocal communication, hearing, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, sitting, pushing, pulling, use of hands to grasp and feel, and vision abilities including close, distance, and adjusting focus. Lifting/moving required frequently up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 40 pounds or more. Work occasionally requires exposure to bloodborne pathogens and is generally in a moderately noisy location.
